Getting to know us…..Josh Bolen

An Interview by Heidi Hallquist

Shannon and I have enjoyed getting to know all of our clients so much over the past few years and we will continue to do so as new people join the association  industry every day.  We would also like you to get to know us a little better. Our next few blogs will be a series of interviews with the attorneys, paralegals, etc. at Carpenter Hazlewood.

Let’s start with Carpenter Hazlewood partner Josh Bolen

BTS: Josh, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself. How does the Bolen household run?

Josh:  I’m 32 years old. I’ve been happily married for about 5 years to my wife Stacy. We have 4 dogs: 3 pugs and a lab. I love pugs! I want to retire a pug millionaire.

BTS: A pug millionaire?

Josh:  Yeah, see, this is my dream retirement.” (Josh then shows me his screensaver which is a “Pug Boat”. Eight little pugs hanging out on the deck a boat. I have to admit; it’s very cute!)

Josh: My family and I are die hard Cardinals fans and have been season ticket holders for years. We always pick one game to travel to every year. I also have accumulated a list of things that you should never do and I try to do all of them.

BTS: So, is that what made you want to be a lawyer? Is it on your list of things you should never do?

Josh:  No. I was actually in school to be an accountant. My best friend Mike had just started law school and he suggested that I give it a try. So I did.

BTS:  And it was obviously a good fit. Why is what you do in Community Association law important?

Josh: When you drive through neighborhoods that have HOA’s, you can tell the difference. I’ve always noticed that compared to other states, Arizona just looks nice. And that’s one of the reasons why…the proof is in the pudding with HOA’s. Maintaining parks and communities should be the city’s job. For the most part, cities have punted that responsibility to associations.  That huge level of responsibility is exactly why it’s important for HOA’s to run smoothly. And that’s what we do: we help them to run smoothly.

BTS: If you could have any super power in the world, what would it be?

Josh: The obvious answer would be to have Wolverine’s powers to regenerate. That way you would never grow old or get sick and you can’t be killed. But my real answer would be to have telepathy.

BTS: Why is that?

Josh:  Because all of the leaders of the villains and the leaders of the super heroes all have telepathy. If you want to be in charge, you need telepathy.

BTS: Ahhh, I see! Telepathy would definitely make plotting world domination much easier. Is there anything else that you would like our Community Association friends to know about you?

Josh: Yes, I would want all of our HOA friends to know that I am very passionate about this industry and I plan to do all I can to help make a better name for the Community Associations of Arizona. I really want to get the public to focus on the 95% of people who are happy living in an association instead of the 5% of people who aren’t.

BTS: Thank you, Josh, for taking the time to sit down with Behind the Scenes. It was great to get to know a little more about you!

Since this interview was conducted we have learned that Josh Bolen has been nominated to sit on the 2013 Board of Directors for CAI Central Arizona Chapter. Congratulations Josh!  It looks like you are well on your way to accomplishing your goal of making a better name for Arizona’s association industry.
